A Business Profile of Evangelos Marinakis
Evangelos Marinakis is the only son of successful Cretan ship owner Miltiadis Marinakis, the ‘Vanimar’ founder who owned his own fleet of ships. Miltiadis Marinakis also provided financial support to Olympiacos Football Club, as well as serving as a Greek Parliament member. Evangelos Marinakis’s mother is Irini Marinakis, née Karakatsani, a descendant of the prestigious Ypsilantis family.
Born on 30th July 1967 in the Greek city of Piraeus, Evangelos Marinakis attended university in London, graduating from the American International University with a bachelor’s degree in International Business Administration and a master’s degree in International Relations.
Keen to follow in the footsteps of his father, Evangelos Marinakis ventured into the shipping industry after completing his education. He worked as a trainee chartering broker at Elders Chartering Limited and Harley Mullion, two prestigious British firms, before going on to establish the Capital Maritime Trading Corp., true to the Marinakis family pedigree.
Evangelos Marinakis served as CEO of Crude Carriers Corp until its merger in 2011. He also founded Capital Product Partners LP, a company listed on the American Stock Exchange that Mr Marinakis presided over as chairman. In 2019, Capital Product Partners LP announced its merger with Diamond S Shipping Inc. in a deal worth a reported $1.65 billion, culminating in the creation of one of the largest listed tanker companies in the world.
In May 2014, Evangelos Marinakis became an elected member of the Piraeus city council. A keen philanthropist, in this role he donated his own funds to finance construction of children’s playgrounds, sports facilities and parks and squares across the city, as the Greek economic crisis left the city council lacking vital funding.
In 2010, Mr Marinakis bought a controlling share in Olympiacos Football Club and he continues to serve as team president today. He formerly presided over the Greek Superleague as president, as well as serving as vice president of the Hellenic Football Federation from 2010 to 2011. He also owns the English football team Nottingham Forest.
The Marinakis family retains control of the Capital Maritime Group, a leading name in international shipping today, managing a fleet of over 70 vessels including dry bulk carriers, container ships and tankers.
In addition to his role as charman of the Capital Maritime & Trading Corp., Evangelos Marinakis is a member of the board of several other companies, including Abisso Holdings Limited (owner), Alter Ego Media SA (owner), One Channel (owner) and Capital Product Partners LP (major shareholder).
In 2018, the Municipality of Piraeus recognised Evangelos Marinakis’s work with local government, presenting him with a special award. In his role as president of Olympiacos FC, Mr Marinakis has also been recognised for his philanthropy, providing funding for the purchase of medical equipment for bone marrow transplants.
With a well-established history of charitable giving, both personally and on behalf of Olympiacos Football Club, Evangelos Marinakis pledged €500,000 in February 2014 to fund the rebuilding of schools in Cephalonia following devastating earthquakes.
Evangelos Marinakis and his wife, Athanasia Marinakis, have four children together. A leading figure in the global shipping industry today, Mr Marinakis has an estimated net worth of $650 million.
